Did you know that this day even existed? I didn’t until I was in class on Monday.
On the calendar for the United States the only recognized day of the entire 365 day calendar year that somewhat recognizes women is Mother’s Day and some could say because if a woman isn’t a mother it reflects on that day as well and in some aspects can make a woman feel less like a woman for not being a mother. I don’t include Valentine’s Day in this because I believe that is a day to celebrate love for the one’s you hold dear, not just to celebrate the love you have towards a woman (mother, sister, girlfriend, whatever the case may be).
So what is International Women’s Day? In a nutshell it is a day that began on March 19, 1911, in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. It started being celebrated on March 8th in 1913 and has stuck ever since then. It began as a day of remembering the negatives towards women and moved to a celebration about the positive changes and to celebrate the achievements of women. It is now an official holiday in fifteen different countries. It is celebrated in the United States but is not an official holiday as of yet. This day is celebrated in a variety of ways: concerts, luncheons, parades, speeches. As of February 8, 2011, there are 429 events by 44 different countries in place to celebrate this day.
Last but certainly not least, I’ve posted a link to a video I hope you will watch. It mentions a little about celebrating women’s day this year but what I really like about it is that it showcases several of the women that have impacted society and legislation for a woman in today’s society. Nice blog; it looks nice too. Interesting stuff about the International Women's Day--I didn't know about how it got started. I wouldn't be too surprised if it were to become recognized as an official holiday in the US before long.
The video was interesting enough, but I have a suggestion for your future blogs. Unfortunately, many of the groups that put things together (like the video) champion mostly liberal women (e.g., Hillary Clinton, Madeline Albright, Michelle Obama, Nancy Pelosi), maybe you could find some women out there that the average moderate to conservative woman could relate to, and then you could write about them...just an idea.

Thanks for the comment. I like your idea and will take that into consideration where possible. Although, I have done a little digging and found that there is a movie coming out about 15 conservative women in politics and shows a bit of their history and their stories.

I love the blog, it looks modern and appealing. The information is very new to me which makes it fun to learn about. I read Preston's comments and agree with him on finding conservative women to highlight. Also I may use this video on the week of March 8th to show the 5 - 6 grades. I think it would be beneficial for these young girls to realize the possibilities open to them. I thought the video also combined black history with women since so many were African-American. Any time in education when you can touch on two topics of high interest it is a win!

Candace - In reading your blog it seems to imply that this special day was celebrated on March 8, 1913 "and has stuck ever since than". I take it that March 8th of every year is the date of the celebration. Am I correct? It might be a good idea to put the date of the event in bold letters near the top of the blog or just under the picture of all of the women. Another idea is that the "It's YOur Day" is a little hard to read for some people.
The work is insightful and can serve a real purpose to support and encourage women of all types.
